‘The rapist is you’: Hymn against sexual violence goes viral

Many thousands of women have descended on the National Stadium in Chile’s capital over the denunciation of sexual violence, it very quickly went viral, spreading across Latin America and the world.

There were performances going on in MexicoColombiaFranceSpain, and the UK, at a time of national unrest.

The song was written by a group called Lastesis, who is a feminist theatre group based in the city of Valparaíso. They credited Chile’s women protesters that helped them spread this work all over the world.

Women of all ages and from all around Santiago were dressed in black and wearing red scarves and blindfolds. They gathered on the sporting venue during the early evening, because of organization facilitated by social media.

The group sang:

“The fault is not with me, nor where I was, nor how I was dressed… The rapist is you!”

They stamped their feet and waved their arms in a choreographed routine, in recent weeks it has been well staged, all around the country and around the world too!

More so, very similar performances have been carried on by women as far away as Paris, Mexico City, and Barcelona as well!

The 66-year-old Jacqueline Saintard told AFP:

“It was a great experience to share this with thousands and thousands of women”

Absolutely furious Chileans have since taken to the streets to protest social and economic inequality too!

Over 3,500 women were killed across Latin America and the Caribbean in acts of gender-based violence last year, so says UN data, awareness is spreading!

Paula Cometa, speaking on behalf of the group, said:

“It was never intended to be a protest song – the women of the marches transformed it into something more”

But the masses have spoken, and it’s clear how people feel, don’t you agree?
