In a bold step, Melinda Gates has said she will spend $1 billion over the next ten years towards promoting gender equality in the U.S. And we think that is completely awesome.
Mrs. Gates announced that she is:
Committed to “expanding women’s power and influence in the United States”
As published in Time magazine, as the wife of businessman Bill Gates she is in a unique position to be able to make this sort of commitment.
She believes that it is:
“only a small fraction” of what’s needed to right gender inequality in the country…
She also said:
“I want to see more women in the position to make decisions, control resources, and shape policies and perspectives”
“I believe that women’s potential is worth investing in, and the people and organizations working to improve women’s lives are, too.”
She will use her company, called Pivotal Ventures, and Gates will push resources into companies that are actively trying to uplift women in business and politics and in general too, as she sees fit.
She wants to defang current barriers to a woman’s professional career advancement, like their caregiving responsibilities and sexual harassment at work, she has a mission she intends to complete!
Not only that but Gates will fast track the careers of women that work in technology, the public officials and media, she said that these industries were intended for and created by men.
Even more than this she will fund research and data on gender inequality in several sectors, so we applaud her every step of the way, Bravo!
“I hope the financial commitment I’m making today is seen as both a vote of confidence in the experts and advocates who are already working on these issues and an invitation for others to join the cause and make commitments of their own”
“Equality can’t wait, and no one in a position to act should either.”
Let’s all show our support, and please tell all your friends about it too!
